July ship club meeting...

Hi all,

Very sorry for the late start today.  A motorist who stopped on I-25 to change a tire was struck by another vehicle which fled the scene.  I of course don't know the details, but there's a special place in hell for somebody runs over another human being and flees the scene.  I diagres.

Anyway, we all finally made it to the meeting!  Here's the LINK of the meeting.

We started off the meeting with some local business...

1.  I advised the account status for our club and that we had an upcoming expense for Zoom coming up this month.  No updates on the money Deacon left to the club.  I expect to hear something this summer.

2.  Speaking of John "Deacon" DuGene, as we discussed Furball Aero is doing a decal sheet in 1/48 for VF-45 Blackbirds, also known as the Boca Chica Bandits.  Long story but the decal offering was incomplete until I learned about that and sent John's photographs to him.  The story is complete.  The set will be about $26 and Geoff advises that there is a huge number of reference sheets with this offering.  If you're interested in a set, let me know how many you want.  So far I have the following listed...

Me - 2 sets

Blake - 2 sets

Brian - 2 sets

Special thanks for Harvey Low for sharing his modeling adventures in Japan.  Several of you mentioned that you wish you had known this before traveling there in the past.  Here's a LINK TO HARVEY'S SLIDES.  I've expressed to Harvey that we would love to have some follow up presentations.

Reminder about the Bathurst group build.  Bring what you can to the August 2nd meeting.  I'm looking forward to seeing what you've done with your model.

Checking what folks are working on...

David Angelo is working on his conversion of the HMS Bellerophon from a Trumpeter kit.  David reports that he's needing to find some railing for the kit.  More to come!

I really like what David has done with the rigging so far.  The lines between the yard arms has a very natural sag to them that looks great.

John Widmar shared quite a few builds with us this month....

First the Takom/Snowman 1/700 Gearing Class model.  This kit came with a 1/72 5in gun mount kit as well.  Will John build the gun for us?  😎

Not a company I have heard of before.  John provided a model of the Protected Cruiser, Nisshin.  John advised that the details on this kit were quite good.

Here's John's model of the HMS Calcutta from Trumpeter.

Last is a barge from F-Star models.  John reported that the kit included nice photo etch and decals, which he really appreciated.  If kits like this interest you, but you would prefer 1/350 scale, Black Cat Models has some nice barge offerings.

Stuart Bailey brought in his Hobby Boss Astute Class submarine in the Royal Navy.  A very nice build indeed.

I enjoyed sharing my trip to the Rocky Mountain Hobby Expo show in Salt Lake City.  Here are my slides from that part of the presentation.

I came across this interesting modeling stand from War Dog Modeling.  It was only $35 and the displayed model on the floor looked very good.  If this is something you think you would be interested in, check out the web site.

This seemed to be a popular item.  It's a chuck that fits the Dspiae hand grinder/sander.  This tool always seemed incomplete because you couldn't add different tools to it.  This chuck provides a great deal of versatility to the tool.  Here's the LINK.  As you can see in the photo it holds my smallest wire bit.  Definitely worth the $8 investment, and you get two!

That's all we had time for today.  See you in August!

June Ship Club Meeting

Sorry for the delay in getting this posted.  Here's a recap of our last meeting...

Here's the LINK to the meeting video.

Following up on Squadron Scale Colors... One of several planned shades of USN Mountbatten Pink has been released by Squadron

We are pushing out the final date for the Bathurst build to our August meeting.  Got this nice line drawing from Stu Robottom in Australia.  This may help with any detailing questions you might have.

Another follow-up was the project Blake and I had with Gabriel in Romania.  We were able to resurrect a valuable kit Jerry left us with by designing and printing the rotor shaft system, cooling fan, and rotor blades.  The kit was missing those items.

Modellers Without Borders group is having a virtual/online model show.  Registration will be open from August 1st through 15th.  This is not a first, second, third contest.  Rather models are EVALUATED based on a standard by qualified judges.  Awards of Gold, Silver, or Bronze are instead awarded based on the quality of your build.

This month in tool time we featured a cordless drill from MIG/AMMO.  The drill has very fine speed control and reviews are very positive.  I may replace my Dremel cordless with this one!

You can find a review HERE

Bacon Bits gave us a great tip for supporting masts while you detail them.  Using a pin vise chuck is a great idea.  Thanks Greg!

I shared the update on the RCSubs.cz Virginia Class submarine.  Oto has done an amazing job of improving the detail and eliminating much of the photo etch required to build this model.

Rob Weilacher shared progress on his Fujimi Shokaku 1941 build in 1/700 scale.  Rob reports the deck is too pretty to litter with airplanes.  We'll have a final photo in time for the next meeting.

David Angelo on his French Battleship, Bouvet.  Remember this was a free 3D Print from an stl file.  David added some details to make this an incredible build.

David also completed the Hog Islander "City of Flint".  You may recall that we had Andrew from Above & Below decals do the decals for this model.  Roger has one in his collection too.

John Widmar is building his invasion fleet for D-Day in 1/700 scale.  Here are his progress photos...

John also built the IJN Kongo by Fujimi.  This model has a wood deck included.  Love wood decks!

I'm continuing my work on the little Bathurst project.  I'm having a lot of fun with this little guy, especially now that I'm done printing them!  A water base for her is in progress.

I'm continuing my work on my Type A, IJN submarines.  The goal is to have it done for the Rocky Mountain Hobby Expo as well as to bring it to the next meeting.  Insider tip.  I'm ready for both!

I have succumbed to the dark side and found some 1/700 tank containers ideal for my project from hell.  I printed them up and they're ready to be finished.... someday.

We recovered the paper Sam made for the IPMS Nationals that were in Colorado and placed them on the blog page along with the other article written on the subject.  This is in regards to the building of Destroyer Escorts and LCT's in Colorado that were shipped to the east and west coast for final assembly.

Squadron is re-engineering their pressure hull for the Revell 1/72 Type VII U-boat.  They are running a little behind on production.  Should be ready soon.  Should also be an improvement over the previous version.

The following are all the new releases coming out.

We had a special Manufacturers Spotlight with a company called Swordfish.  It looks like they do some very nice detail parts.  You can find their store at this LINK
